How do I find new commercial insurance customers in my insurance agency?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

How can you find new P/C customers Commercial and Personal Lines in a soft market?

You pick a class where you think you have a competitive product. Go to the yellow pages, look up the addresses, and go visit each one. Sometimes 4-5 times. Ask for referrals from existing clients. Ask your marketing reps for prospects – most carriers WILL give you a list of prospects – mostly for classes they are targeting, from yellow pages or D&B reports.

D&B is another great way to find ‘em, you can get financially solvent companies, by SIC code.

What does Commercial Liability Insurance cover?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

My husband is starting a welding business and we got a quote today from an insurance company for Commercial Liability Insurance that includes coverage for his tools as well. What does this all cover, I understand the tools part (for the most part) but I do not completely understand what commercial liability covers. I tried Google’ing it I just got "get a quote sites".

First things first, the agent you obtained the quote from should be more then willing to explain this to you. If not, then do yourself a favor and obtains quotes from other agents/brokers.

Basically liability can be defined as:
"An individual or business may incur a loss as a result of their actions toward other people or their property. Such losses are called liability losses. A liability loss occurs when a person is determined to have been responsible, or liable, for loss to another person or another persons property and is required to make financial restitution"

As a welder your husband needs to understand what risks he may be responsible or liable for? What actions might cause harm to another person or their property?

Does he have a shop where he might have customer coming and going? The most common exposure for this is trip and fall. What if someone enters his shop and trips/slips and they hurt themselves? He could be held responsible for their safety and Commercial Liability would cover this.

What is he welding? You need to make sure your quote(s) include coverage for Products & Completed Operations. This would cover his actual "welding" as this is his completed operation.

For example: say your husband welded on a trailer hitch to a truck. The owner of the truck then hooked up their trailer and went on their way. After a few miles the hitch gave way causing the trailer to disconnect from the vehicle wrecking into another vehicle. Later they determined the weld on the trailer hitch was the cause of the accident and your husband gets sued for faulty workmanship.

This could be considered his responsibility and is exactly why you would purchase liability coverage.

Liability is not always clear cut as to what is covered and what is not. Unfortunately often times there is no black or white (what is or is not covered).

Hope this helps and good luck with your business

How much do commercial bus companies pay for insurance?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I have heard that commercial bus insurance is very expensive, but I can’t seem to find a website or forum that gives an estimation of cost.

Do insurance companies per bus, or per driver, or both? What is the cost average per bus and per driver?
is that 10,000 to 25,000 dollars a per month thing?

Oh, it’s by bus, as long as all the drivers are over 26, with clean records. It’s rated on number of seats, and radius of operations, which is why you can’t get an average – because just with those three catgories (driver, seats, radius) you’re looking 27 different sets of rates – and that doesn’t even include extra liability needed for airports, if they go there, or physical damage coverage on the busses.

Everything is also experience rated.

Most city busses are owned by the city – and "self insure" up to $250,000 per claim – so that ALSO skews the rates – having a $250,000 deductible seriously lessens coverage.

In short – if you called me asking for an indication of premium, I’d tell you somewhere between $10,000 and $25,000 per bus – or more.

As a claims assistant for a commercial liabilty insurance company, what training will help me to advance?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I work for a Insurance Company here in Los Angeles. It’s a Commercial Liability Insurance Company. I dont do any handling of claim, but I am a Claims Adjuster Assistant. I review court documents to identify facts and the nature of the accident that took place. Send out acknowledgement letter, as well as closing notices. What certification would I want to start off with being new to the insurance industry? What courses would I start off with?

http://www.aicpcu.org/

Go to this web site.

They offer lots of different programs in insurance.

You may want to start out with an easy one like INS. It’s 3 courses and its not hard at all. It is good introductory information.

In claims, you usually start with INS and then move onto AIC (Associate in Claims).

If you are wanting to eventually be an adjuster – these are the two to start out with.

Is that supposed to be a gay couple in the Progressive Insurance commercial?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I have seen a commercial for Progressive Insurance, and there are a two guys going in to buy insurance, and while the commercial doesn’t specifically say this, I think they are supposed to be a gay couple. Anyone else seen this commercial? What do you think?

It very possibly could be. I saw the commercial and wondered. I pondered it for awhile. And i have a theotheories
Progressive is trying to hint that they are gay friendly without losing their homophobic straight customers. The gays will assume it is two gay guys and straight guys might assume that they are friends, co workers, brothers, etc. It is a very VERY good attempt to be politically correct. they are satisfying both sexualities.
