Best Wishes,
So i just started driving and my parents put my name under the title of our van because the insurance was cheaper. Well i would like to save up and get my own car, but they keep bringing up that the insurance would sky rocket. The van is a ‘03 Honda odyssey and the car i’m looking at is a ‘91 Toyota 4runner. If anybody could give me a ballpark estimate of how much the insurance will cost for one verses the other. I’m 16 and live in the zip code 80127. Dont know if any other info is needed. Thanks.
We actually already have a good insurance agent, i just want to know about the difference in cost for the two vehicles.
Your parents are prob. right. The factors against you:
new driver
no driving history
age (ie: very young)
will ramp up that insurance to the point where it will actually cost more then the value of the car after about two years.
PLUS.. your parents will STILL have to have some kind of coverage on you since until you are an adult or emancipated, they are legally responsible for your actions.
Stick with their insurance and save the money for a GREAT car in about 5 years.

I’m shopping around for insurance quotes because I thought my car insurance was too high. Progressive gave me a very low quote, which I was happy about. It was what I thought I should be paying compared to friends I’ve talked with. All the other quotes from the other insurance companies were in the same price range and very high. I began to worry that Progressive had some incorrect info, so I called them back, we went over all the info again, and everything is right. They even emailed my quote to me and it’s all correct. Should I be worried that the quote is so low or is Progressive just being competetive?
Doesn’t matter. If they take your money and write you a policy (and don’t say OOPS three days later) you should be fine.
You could just be falling into a specific underwriting model that Progressive uses. Count your luck!

So, I called and called. Got some quotes. Chose the most reasonable rate. But then the insurance companies turned around and increased premium after I had the policy, usually with B.S kind of reasons, e.g. there is a crack in a few decorative bricks..
How do I do it better next time. Or they’re there to rip you off no matter what you do?
Never heard of this happening. First I pay, then I get policy. Might even pay and get policy at same time but if they increase premium I just don’t pay and they can keep their policy.
Not sure what you did. I pay about $130 yearly for a 170.000 excess. If the house gets flattened or burned that’s what they pay. Can’t get cheaper than that I think.
I did 4 different quotes on full coverage insurance for my 05 Ford Truck, ALL Quotes are the EXACT same coverage, the most expensive is $973 and the least expensive is $319 for 6 months.
Why are the rates so different in prices?
Just out of curiosity, is that $973 for six months?
That is a HUGE range in premium. There are a couple things that could cause that, assuming you did triple check the coverages to match:
1. policy term – maybe one is for 12 months, and one is for 6.
2. payment plans – maybe one is giving you a paid in full discount, and one is giving you installment charges added in
3. estimated premiums – maybe one checked into your driving record and credit score already, so it’s an ACCURATE quote, and the other just gave you an estimated quote, and will check your credit & driving record later, after you commit to the policy.
Also, some companies just TARGET certain demographics. They decide they WANT to write them, and they’ll discount rates for that demographic. Example: Progressive. If you are 40, single, male, have one DUI, no other driving incidents, and a fantastic credit score, Progressive can’t be BEAT. They are way, way, way cheap for this demographic. They’ve decided it’s probably a fluke, you’re responsible, and it won’t happen again. And they’re making money hand over fist, because all the OTHER companies out there are, well, charging like you have a DUI.
That’s why there really is NO shortcut for finding the best rate for YOU – different companies target different demographics.
