I’m 18 and I want to buy a 1984 900cc kawasaki ninja motorcycle. I have an 84 camaro and I’m on my dad’s insurance which means it’s only around $80 a month. He is 50 and has alot of experience with motorcycles. I know that insurance is sky-high when your under 25 so my question is, if I’m on my dads insurance will it be cheaper like it is on my car or will it be just as expensive?

I live in NC and I need to know if motorcycle insurance is required
so to add to my question, i know that it’s not required in all states but what i want to know is if it is required in NC

Check with your Department of Motor Vehicles or an insurance agent.

It’s not required in NH. But, if you get in an accident, it will be unless you can pay for everything immediately. If you can’t, you will have to arrange how to pay it, insurance WILL be required (at a much higher cost, and difficult to find). If you default on a payment, or lose your insurance, you WILL lose your license.

Liability is cheap.
Mine runs less than $180 for 6 months, includes uninsured driver and medical.

So my dad doesn’t have a motorcycle endorsement, but I do. It would be cheaper to put him on the bike for insurance. Do they usually allow that if he wouldn’t ride the bike?

I can never find just a strait answer. All i want to know is how much it would for a 18 year old to have his own motorcycle insurance under his name. I have no prior riding experience. i have no tickets or anything on my record whatsoever. Please dont answer with a smart a** comment about how to just call the insurance company because i already did that and they wouldnt tell me unless i fully committed to their policy. I want liability and property. The bike is a 1992 yamaha seca 2.

I’m planning to buy a used motorcycle from a private party within the coming month or so. My question is, do i buy the motorcycle first, take it home, then get it insured? Or do i legally have to buy insurance first before i can purchase it from the private party?

You should definitely get some quotes before you go pick up your bike. I am not sure what bike you are getting or how old you are, but some bikes will take a big chunk out of your wallet to insure (like $2,000 or more per year).
Dealerships will require you to show proof of insurance if you are going to finance the bike. If you are going to buy it with cash, then they don’t care. If you wreck it or get pulled over, it is your responsibility.
Depending on the state, you usually have 30 days to insure the vehicle (or bike)after you purchase it. However, if you wreck it or cause damage to someone else and you dont have insurance during those 30 days, you are screwed and they can sue you.

I would get some quotes to set up a policy, and while you are at the dealership (or as soon as you get home) activate the policy that is right for you.

I’ll be going away for college in a little over a month and I wanted to insure my motorcycle to I can ride it for the remainder of the summer. If I only want insurance for one month, should I just tell them that, or buy coverage with monthly payments and stop paying after the first month? Also, if I just stop paying, will this make it harder to get coverage from them in the future?

Do not just "stop paying." You’re insurance continues for a couple months even if you don’t pay. When the policy is finally cancelled for non-payment, you will still owe the insurance company for the months you were insured, but not paid for. They can (and will) send you to collections for this money and they are unlikely to take you on as a customer in the future.

When you decide you no longer want insurance, just call up your insurance company and cancel your policy. They will refund any premium that you paid but didn’t use. You don’t need to provide them with a reason.

There’s no reason not to be up-front with the insurance company when you first sign up. Just ask them "are there any penalties if I cancel my insurance before the expiration date?"

The other thing that you have to be careful about is your registration. Many states require current insurance to keep a car registered. If you cancel your policy, your insurance company may notify DMV that you are no longer insured. DMV may suspend your vehicle registration until you get new insurance. You might just call up the DMV office in your state and run this scenario past them so that you don’t face any unexpected penalties.

an sr-22 will give you no coverage for your bike, so the value of the bike isnt even relevent.

what will make a difference is your gender, age, location and driving record.
