What lets officers know right away that I have insurance on the vehicle?

I’m sort of new to the whole laws of driving thing and live in the state of Texas. I went to go get my registration renewed on my car today and asked for my insurance. When officers pull you over and run your plates, what is it that lets them know right away (without getting out of their vehicle) if I have insurance or not? Is it the vehicle registration?

It is random! They may not ask you next year. Also they might send you a letter in the mail asking you to come to the court house or where ever to show proof of insurance throughout the year at any given time randomly. The police officer in no way knows if you have insurance via running the plate. That is why you are asked for proof of insurance when they approach your vehicle.

1: If you do not show the proof, you get no tag.
2: If you get a letter to come show the proof and you don’t in a given time, your tag is suspended. In that case they officer would know you were suspended for not showing proof of insurance.

In that case, you could get off with the no insurance if you had insurance at the time of the traffic stop, however you would probably get a suspended tag ticket and you would probably be able to beat that without going to court if you had good reason for not making it to show proof in the first place.

All depends on the cop and if he had to pay for his donuts and coffee he had prior to pulling you over or not.

Do I need to purchase any other insurance when renting a vehicle?

I am going to be renting a car soon. My mastercard offers insurance for the vehicle. Is there any other insurance I should buy from the car rental company? I don’t want to get in an accident and discover that I am not fully covered.

Most automobile insurance companys will cover you in a rental car, if you have accident coverage with them. Check with them before you buy other insurance. If you do not have this coverage, you will need to purchase it elsewhere. Compare the mastercard prices against the ones offered by the car rental place. Hope this helps..

Insurance and storing my vehicle long term question?

My job is sending me overseas to work for 3-4 years and I need to store my vehicle for the duration. What am I required to have on insurance for my vehicle while it’s being stored in california?

If it’s being stored you may just minimize your policy to damage and / or theft. I travel overseas a lot on contracts but only for at most 18 months at a time. I just maintain my policy as is cause it decreases the longer I am with that company.

I got in an accident in my step dads truck and his insurance covered the car i hit and wrote him a check for his vehicle. will my rates go up even though i was not driving my vehicle. things to consider…i am a sixteen year old male.

it goes on your drivers license number not the vehicle, so yes if you were at fault then definitely yes, if you weren’t then maybe not but probably will.

Can I get cheaper insurance while my vehicle is in storage?

I’m going to be out of the country for a while, and am putting my car in an auto storage place. But since I’m keeping it registered and leaving the plates on it, I have to maintain insurance. Do any insurance companies offer cheaper insurance or a special type of insurance that I can put on there, since I wont be driving the vehicle? This is because I’m deploying to Iraq, btw.

Can you do it? Many companies will let you, yes. You can contact your company and ask for coverage to be dropped to "COMP only," which will remove all liability coverage and physical damage coverage (i.e. collision coverage), leaving only comprehensive coverage. Leaving COMP coverage protects your vehicle from theft, building collapse etc. This will significantly decrease your premiums, but there are a few things to know about doing this.

First is that you will have zero liability protection. This means if someone is walking by your car while it’s in storage and they happen to trip on it, they can sue you and your insurance comapny will (rightly) deny the claim because the coverage wouldn’t exist. Trust me, it happens. This risk is magnified since your vehicle will be in a public storage facility and I would bet they have a strict no-liability rule about how you’re responsible for any damages that are related to your vehicle. I’d definitely recommend that you check into what the storage facility’s policies are with regard to liability.

Second, if you do not own your vehicle outright (i.e. have a lease/loan on it), the title company may have a requirement that you maintain COMP and COLL coverage on it at all times. If this is the case, you cannot drop down to COMP coverage only or they may force-place coverage on the vehicle. You should give them a call to see what their requirements for coverage are.

Can i purchase insurance for a vehicle that my parents still legally own?

My parents legally own the vehicle that I have driven for the last 6 years in Texas. This year I got married and purchased my own insurance policy. We just had the car re-registered in June in the county they live in. To save from having to get it registered again in the county I live in if they sign over the title we thought about just keeping things the way they are until next year. Will i run into any legal problems by maintaining an insurance policy for the vehicle even though I do not own it?

Wrong state, again (Connecticut — what I’m saying is based on CT insurance — Colorado may have different subtleties). You shouldn’t need insurance if it isn’t being driven (but will when/if it is). When driven, a car needs liability coverage (damage caused by your vehicle to people and/or property). Optional coverages are comp and collision (comp is stuff other than collision, like theft, vandalism, and acts of G-d — NOT random breakdown). Sometimes people get a license plate and put comp-only coverage (no liability) on a vehicle (liability MUST be added before that vehicle gets driven — a competent agent will make you sign a waiver to that effect). If you only have one vehicle on your policy, the discount of having multiple vehicles on the policy may outweigh the comp-only on that vehicle plus the cost of the plate (depending on your insurance carrier).

I have a vehicle for which the title is held by the bank. It recently became inoperable, and we are working on getting it repaired. In the meantime, am I required to pay for insurance on the vehicle?

Bank will require you to keep insurance just in case it catches on fire while being repaired. Your insurance company will charge you more to renew if you cancel coverage. Yes the bank and insurance companys have you keep full coverage aginst the banks loss.

Sent my keys to insurance company and they lost them and now vehicle found?

My car was stolen so i filled out the information and sent it and my keys to the insurance company. I was called by the local police dept. who stated my vehicle has been found. I called my insurance company to get my keys back but they advised they never received them. Now i have no keys and now way to pick up my vehicle. Does the insurance company have to pay me for my car still? What can I do?

1. If you have full coverage then yes the insurance will still need to pay for any damages done to your vehicle less the deductible.

2. As for your keys that will be your problem because you are never to send the keys to a vehicle until everything is finalized by the insurance company, meaning if the vehicle was totaled then you would give them the keys..

3. You can get the VIN number off the car and get a set of keys made at the dealership as long as you can show them proof of ownership..
